It should come as no surprise that my expectations for this musical adaption of Louisa May Alcott’s novel was pretty low, mainly because I’m not really a fan of the book or any of the previous screen adaptions. I am, however, familiar with it because my wife is a fan and because we visited the Orchard House. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised.
First and foremost, my hat goes off to Kim Oler and Alison Hubbard for the music and lyrics. The performance included 23 original songs (although the program indicated that over 70 songs were written for the musical) that transitioned nicely throughout the story.
Shannon and I both agree that “I Do Not Need A Man” and “I’m Not Perfect” were our favorites of the evening. I also thought Marie Kemp showed great range on “I Have a Garden”.
Sarah Shahinian was outstanding as Jo. Both her voice and her acting was top notch. David Studwell (Professor Fritz Bhaer) and Dominique Stasiuus (Laurie) were also very entertaining and added some comic relief in sections of the first and second acts. I was also impressed with the way that David Studwell maintained his character’s accent, even while singing.
Alright, there were a few areas that I felt like I was watching a made for television original on the SyFy Channel produced by Oprah, but I have to admit it was true to Alcott’s work. I have to give it up for Syracuse Stage and all of the people involved in this production. They produced a great show and they entertained me for its duration — something I was very skeptical of going into the performance.
If you happen to catch one of upcoming shows, bring a few extra dollars with you to help Syracuse Stage in it’s efforts to raise money for the fight against AIDS. What better way to share in the true spirit of Christmas than to help a stranger a need.
