Czaja 4th of July …

04 Jul

Fourth of July means the annual Czaja 4th of July party.  This year’s event was held at Dave and Judy’s House.  Theresa did a great job with the food while Dave manned the grill.  I did get a lot of pictures but I’m only going to post a few.  Here we go.

I thought the Margarita table was nice touch.  It was well used throughout the day and Shannon did a great job mixing drinks.  It’s that Sam’s Lakeside training kicking in.

My mom and Judy’s youngest.  Just too tiny for me to hold.  I was getting nervous watching other people hold him.  My pre-requisite is that any child must be developed beyond the point of being a bubble head doll before I’ll touch him/her.

AJ’s great uncle Steve bought him a boat that fills with water and features buckets, cups and even a water cannon.  Anthony must have used about half of the water in that boat to drown the flowers …

It was nice to see the SNL gang at the festivities this year.  I just hope that Lori isn’t manning the video camera at her daughter’s upcoming wedding.  You can see her handiwork below.

Weekend Update …

06 Jul

Well, the weekend is coming to a close and it was packed with food, friends, food, family and food. Instead of doing the typical family gatherings this year, Shannon and I decided to attend the BrowAja Fair in Liverpool. Stealing a couple of pictures from my brother-in-law’s camera, along with a few of my own, I think I’ve captured the essence of this festival’s two day spirit.

Day 1 – July 4th

Arriving early in the afternoon of the 4th, the performers were hard at work putting the last minute preparations together for the day’s activities. Some of the sets were extremely complicated to assemble and required the brightest minds to review, evaluate and complete the constructions.

Unfortunately, the staff had to communicate with the audience that it was not permitted to touch the photography equipment. “The equipment is not a toy.” Of course, some visitors just don’t pay attention to the rules.

This year’s show was an outstanding cast that had some of the most graceful and creative actors and actresses I’ve ever seen. We were amazed by the amount of time that these actors must spend physically preparing their bodies to perform at this level.

And let me tell you, the performances on the diving board was first class. It was impressive how little splash was recorded when the divers completed their dives.

In between the acts, you had a very relaxed environment to talk and socialize with friends and family. Some of the kids in our family are really starting to become quite beautiful.

One of my favorite performances of the day was the “Deadly Triple Ring of Death Jump”. In order for this performance to be executed so perfectly, the shifting of muscles must be extended to cleanly slide through the holes of these medium sized rings of death.

And what performance wouldn’t be complete without the little people entertaining us between acts? This show offered plenty of that as well.

One drunk spectator fell in the pool, but they seamed to fish him out before the food came.

Note to Reader: Initially, I had a very nice food review ready to be printed in this portion of the blog. However, rumors have it that the owner of the establishment was
nearly hospitalized due to sudden stomach illness the following day. Endorsement of the food quality must be suspended until further investigation can be made.

The end of the first day festivities concluded with a short, but graceful water ballet scene, possibly written by John Lennon.

It was absolutely delightful to listen to his classic comedy routines “I used to smoke four packs of cigarettes a day but I told myself I was gonna die” and “Look at all these cars” various times. And to be able sit in the middle of a field, getting bit by mosquito’s in Solvay listening to these classic routines again and again was priceless. Memories I’ll never forget.

Day 2 – July 5th

Just like clockwork, at noon the following day, the new troupe had taken to the preparations for the fair’s finale later that same day. In addition to the prestige, portions of the money raised went a favorite local MS Charity.

Imagine my surprise to find that staff was also a part of the entertainment later that day! But, I’m skipping a head of myself.

People came out of the woodwork on the second day. We saw members of the local Catholic Church spreading the word of God to some who needed a more enlightened view of the Church’s workings.

Many local and regionally handicapped individuals were invited to attend.

This troupe left no group out. I was happy to see that a lot of the more mature visitors were able to make it and by the expressions on their faces, they were having a great time!

The highlight of the afternoon was the family talent contest. Both young and old, handicapped and healthy, staff and visitors, all participated in this event.

The competition was brutal. So much talent and beauty to choose from. Of course, like any other competition, a couple of the contestants were real dogs and others just didn’t seam to fit.

The judges had a mind boggling job trying to determine who the winner of this year’s talent show would be.

In the end, however, the decision was clear. The winners of this year’s “Browaja Award of Excellence” went to outside grounds keeper and Pokeno professional Stephano Czajaki. This announcement nearly brought him into tears of happiness.

His father, Edwardo Cxajaki was on hand and very proud of his son’s accomplishments. His final comments to the crowd were “… some day my boy will be just like me.” I needed a tissue.

Unfortunately, as we started to head out of the gates, we found that this traditional “Irish-Polish” festival charged admission when exiting the park and we were a little short on funds. So my wife and I were forced to scrub dishes, move furniture and load cars to cover the remainder of our outstanding bill.

I stayed on with a few of the other staff members to play a little cards, long after the sets had been broken down and my wife and the audience departed. I was duped into having a small (almost paper thin) tasting of leftover chicken on a piece of Italian bread and ended up having to pay another $5.15 to cover the cost of the chicken. And I was glad to do it ……

What a wonderful surprise it was to find out that I was the lone member of the audience to be selected to participate in the viewing of fireworks and a special one-on-one performance of the oldest actors in the troupe that would preforming the next day. Of course I jumped on this at once and realized it as an opportunity of a life time.

Inner Harbor Fireworks Display …

27 Jun

Tonight, Shannon and I picked up my grandfather to see the fireworks display at the Inner Harbor. As my grandfather had mentioned to us on several occasions, “he loves fireworks”.

On a muggy 82 degree night, I’d estimate around 10.000 – 13,000 people showed up to see the “Blacklites” and “The Stan Colella Orchestra”. We didn’t catch any of the Blacklites, but I thought the Stan Colella Orchestra was pretty good. Now under the direction of Len Colella, they played mainly traditional 4th of July music — lots of Sousa, Sinatra, America the Beautiful, etc. Some of my favorite tunes were “Mack the Knife”, “New York, New York” and “That’s Life” — Sinatra would have been proud.

The main picture is of the stage where the orchestra was playing. There was another stage set up across the harbor with ample concessions and viewing for everyone. I thought the fireworks were pretty good and I’m pretty sure that my grandfather enjoyed himself. The wheel chair was a great idea. Unfortunately the exit from the parking lot was about as long as the fireworks themselves.

And So It Goes
