Winding Down …

03 May

Friday, April 30th

Today is the day that we begin our third or fourth wine weekend at Buttonwood. This year everyone was able to leave on Friday morning so we decided (or I decided and they humored me) to start by hiking Taughannock Falls.

Google had suggested that the quickest way to get to Taughannock Falls State Park was via 81 to Cortland then through Ithaca and finally up to Trumansberg. The GPS however wanted us to take the t hruway to Montezuma and travel south to Trumansberg. We did neither.

Steven and I were following the directions down to almost Ithaca. Then we decided to follow the GPS the remainder of the way. Next thing you know, we’re in Auburn. Don’t ask me how it happened but an 80 minute drive turned into 3 hours. Imagine our disappointment when we found out it was Owasco Lake we were driving up and not Cayuga Lake.

The game plan was to meet Mary and Shannon but due to the delay they had to do a little waiting. After a quick bite to eat, Steve and Mary went back to the cabins while Shannon and I hiked the North Rim, South Rim and Gorge trails.

You couldn’t have asked for better weather and it was a nice hike. Shannon especially liked the first four or five sets of stairs ascending to the rim. I have hike details on Trails, Tails and Tents.

After regrouping and settling into the cabins, we headed out to O’Malleys for dinner. It wasn’t bad by my standards but it really wasn’t anything special. I guess I would call it diner food at restaurant prices. I’m pretty sure no one will be up to heading back here again any time soon. The burger was an especially big hit.

We end the day with a glass of wine and a campfire. In fact, I’m typing this entry on my cell phone in, well to be honest, the most uncomfortable Adirondack chair I’ve been in my life, sitting in front of the fire. Not too shabby in my book.

Saturday holds a lot of promise. We may have some friends join us. The weather should be warmer … and hopefully as dry as today was. The wine trail awaits.

Saturday, May 1st

We knew today was going to be a hot one the minute we stepped out of the cabin.  I haven’t heard anything about the final temperature, but everyone was hot and red by time we reached the cabins.  Of course, I tried explaining to my companions that using the air conditioning in the car while you’re getting in and out makes the transition to heat worse.  They weren’t really interested in what I had to say.

Off to Ithaca for breakfast at Kelly’s, the self proclaimed world’s best omlette.  It was a good breakfast.  However, they might have wanted to re-think the whole air gun / compressor repairs until after coffee anyway.  We were off to the wineries.  Our idea being to work our way back up to the cabins.

The wine tasting was alright, but I think everyone found it to be a little “old hat”.  We pretty much know what we like and what wineries we enjoy.  The plants and the tasting were good (although why was everyone going crazy with the feta cheese — uuuugggh).

Things livened up a little bit when the remaining parts of the SNL+1 gang arrived.  We met up at Lucas and worked through the rest of the stops together back to Buttonwood.  We were grateful that they stopped by the cabins for a while to help us get rid of our leftovers — :) Too bad Lori didn’t stay a little while longer because we had some of her favorite teriyaki boneless chicken wings, among other things, delivered to the camp.  I’m not quite sure there is much “chicken” is in the “boneless wings”.

A few sprinkles got us motivated to clean up the area.  A little more eating.  A little more campfire.  Of course the biggest disappointment for me was my failure to get the full (or almost full) moon off the lake photo for this, my third straight year.  It was one thing or another … clouds, equipment, timing.  I waited patiently.  When everyone else said no way, I said maybe.  Well, fuck the moon on the lake shot.  Final score Moon 6 – Visitors 0.  Off to watch Saturday Night Live.

Sunday, May 2nd

We decide as a group not to take the return drive to Romlius to pickup on wine trail after we had breakfast in Seneca Falls.  After breakfast we all were very excited to take the short and highly enjoyable walk along sculpture trail since we now had a little extra time.  Everyone was laughing and smiling and all agreed it was the best time spent this weekend —- After breakfast we headed home.  The end.

Special thanks goes out to my mom and dad for watching Chinook for us this weekend.  We really appreciate it.

Letchworth Weekend …

Shannon and I were lucky enough to be invited to join Lori & Bob, Nancy and Steven this weekend at Letchworth State Park.  We had a great time.  If laughing leads to longer life, we certainly added a few years.

Late Friday afternoon, we made our way to the park via the Castile entrance.  Immediately we were met by deer.  These deer were scattered throughout the entire park.

It was a wet night outside, but the cabin was very cozy.  We broke out a few games and had a few laughs while socializing.  Having Lori as a partner in “Time’s Up”, I thought she was a little distracted by the Grey Goose wandering around the cabin, but after spending the weekend with her, I now know that I must interject the following before she looses interest in this blog:

LORI.  THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING THIS WEEKEND.  SHANNON AND I HAD A GREAT TIME!!!!!!!  YOU HAD US LAUGHING OUR ASSES OFF.  YOUR HOSTEE — GARY & SHANNON

The next morning the sun broke through the trees and we were off to do a little hiking.  We started off with an “Easy 1/2 mile” hike on the Lee’s Landing trail.  I was really glad to see how easily everyone handled the slight incline on the trail back to the trailhead.

We headed back (and forth and back and forth) to the cabin for a little lunch and down time while we waited for Lori and Bob’s son and girl friend to join us.  We packed up again and headed to the upper falls.

Selkirk Shores …

07 Jun

Friday night we headed out to Selkirk Shores State Park and rented a cabin (#10) for the weekend.

Admittedly, the start of the weekend was a little rough. We had (or more accurately, still have) a little situation at work that called for me to pretty much be tied to my cell checking and/or responding to e-mail messages until 1:00am Saturday morning. I’m all for being wireless, but remember when camping used to be about getting away from it all?

I finally decided that I was going to turn the cell off and enjoy Saturday morning. Chinook was a little restless the night before. She was walking back and forth on the floors and her nails were clicking against the floorboards. Bank and forth. Back and forth. I moved her bed to a couple of different positions but she just wouldn’t settle down. Finally, I brought her up on the bed with me.

Chinook and I have a mutual arrangement as far as the bed goes. I don’t allow her on the bed uninvited or allow her to sleep on the bed at night. She doesn’t like to sleep on the bed …. or at least while I’m around … and avoids reprimand by sleeping on her bed. It works.

Friday night, however, she sleep at the foot of the bed for the majority of the night. At least, until around 5am. At that point she jumped off the bed and began pacing the floors once again. Click, click, click, click … pause. Click, click, click, click. You get the picture.

We decided to start our day around 5:48am.

Alert canine in hand, we hit up the blue, yellow, red (portions of this trail twice) and a segment of the orange trail. In all we walked about 4 miles round trip. The trails were well groomed with ample trail markers. The entire trip we saw one person — twice.

Blue Trail

A runner passed us on the blue trail and about 20 minutes later lapped us again. He indicated that ran this trail twice and then went on to mention other trails he was running as his voice faded into the distance. He was running a pretty good pace too. As my grandmother and Aunt Emily used to say, “Awe. God bless ‘em.”

Red Trail

Along the way, we manged to hit a couple geocaches. It’s been a while since doing any geocaching so this was a nice change of pace. My wife and I had pretty good team work. She navigated us to through the trails while I walked Chinook and She watched Chinook while I did the off trail exploring. The geocache “Papa’s Park” was especially gratifying as we were unsuccessful finding it last time out.

“Papa’s Park” – N43 33.021 W 076 12.320

“Arlie’s Selkirk Search” – N43 33.197 W 076 12.014

The second cache was the reason that we doubled back on the red trail. I’m glad I did because it allowed me to swing on this vine we came across on the trail. At first I was skeptical if it would hold this beautifully sculpted body weight, but I think it could have taken quite a bit more pounds as well.

There was a third cache in the park, but we decided to return to the cabin for lunch. At this point the hiking was a little longer than I expected it would be and I wasn’t sure how well the dog would hold up.

After lunch, a brief hello to the Piper family and Marylee who arrived in the early afternoon, I headed down to Grindstone Creek with pole in hand. I spent about three hours fishing from the mouth about a 1/2 mile in and back again. I saw several groups of gar pike, a couple of big carp and one big brown that looked like a confused veteran of the fish hook wars. And I had nothing … not a hit. I fished it with bobber and on bottom. With live worms, plastics worms, jigs — even through a few egg sacks out there. Nothing (although I saw several fisherman all with similar looks of aggravation and no fish).

About ready to pack it in, I had a big hit on my bobber. I set the hook and it started to run a little (4lb test). A few seconds later, all hopes were dashed as I hooked my natural nemesis, the water snake. I hate those sneaky bastards. I tried to shake him off my hook, but ended up loosing my rig. Which was pretty much fine with me. I packed it in and headed ba
ck to cabin.

Did you know that the local pizza place delivers to the state park? Yup — pizza, wings and Coronas for dinner.

We had a good time visiting with Brian, Heather, Uma and the kids. Our dog melted into a puddle on the lawn. To the point where my wife was concerned she wouldn’t wake up again. And later that night, there was not a single click, click, click on the floor boards to be heard.

Paul, Sue and some of their family arrived at the cabin next to Heather and Brian and the next morning we said hello over coffee before heading home.

Below is my favorite picture of the weekend.
